What is Timber Floor Sanding and Polishing?
Sanding a timber floor is the process of finely removing a desired amount of the top surface of a new or existing timber floor. This is carried out with an abrasive sanding pad or sandpaper and results in a smooth, revitalised timber surface that is perfect for staining or polishing.

- How long have you worked at NS Timber Flooring? My father started sanding floors in 1982 and has grown the business to what it is today. My grandfather also worked alongside him for many years and I have worked in the family business for the past 15 years
- What are your qualifications? I have a Certificate 3 Apprenticeship in Floorcovering and finishing with a further 10 years of industry and company experience. In addition to these, I undertake continual professional development completing various industry training.
- Roughly how many sanding and polishing jobs have you done in your career? Over the course of my career, I have physically sanded and polished over 1,000 floors. With regards to quoting and production, the number is close to 3000.
- On average, how many sanding & polishing jobs does NS Timber Flooring complete a week? On average, we sand and polish 8 – 15 projects of various size per week.
- What’s one thing about sanding and polishing that homeowners are surprised to learn about when speaking with you? Most homeowners fail to realise how cost-effective sanding and polishing is when you calculate over the life of the floor.
- How often do I need to sand and polish my timber floors? Depending on lifestyle usage and the type of coating chosen the average floor will last without any maintenance anywhere from 5 to 20 years
- What do homeowners need to consider when planning to sand and polish their floors? Homeowners need to consider what their expectations are based on their lifestyle especially with timber being a natural product. More importantly, homeowners need to be aware of the complete process.
- What’s the biggest myth about sanding and polishing? Homeowners don’t realise that solid timber floors can be sanded and polished many times. Unlike solid timber floors, many homeowners fail to realise that most engineered floors cannot be resanded back at a later stage.
