Being a natural product, timber floors can be susceptible to damage from dirt, dust, and other debris, so it’s important to clean them regularly. Here are some tips for keeping your hardwood floors clean and free of scratches so they last for years to come.

What is the best way to clean timber floors?

Regularly sweep floor with an electrostatic dust mop or vacuum with a soft, clean brush head. To help maintain the appearance of the coating and for further cleaning, we recommend a water and solvent based polyethene floor cleaner This will aid in the removal of scuff marks and other grime. Always follow directions on the manufacture’s label. NS Timber Flooring have a range of care and maintenance products – including wax cleaners – available in our Brendale Showroom.

Is it okay to mop floors with water?

Yes, but only with a damp (not wet) mop. Avoid using too much water, as this is where you run the risk of damaging the wood. Similarly, it is important to wipe up spills immediately.

Timber flooring maintenance

Timber floors are easy to maintain. Here are 6 easy ways you can protect your timber floors:

  1. Anti-static mop – A regular clean with an anti-static mop can help to pick up any unwanted dust or grit.
  2. Vacuum with soft brush – Be sure to use a soft-bristled brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner to avoid scratching the floor’s surface.
  3. Damp mop fortnightly or monthly – for best results only use water or products recommended by NS Timber Flooring.
  4. Walk on/off mats – Mats can prevent wear and tear especially in high traffic areas.TIP: Avoid wearing stiletto heels or shoes with grit caught in them. And don’t forget to clip your pet’s nails regularly.
  5. Protective pads on furniture feet – This will help to prevent scratches.
  6. Be aware of direct sunlight – Use blinds, curtains, shutters or tinted windows to ensure your timber floors are protected from direct sunlight. Rearranging your furniture every few months will also help ensure all areas of your floor receive direct sunlight, rather than the same spots year round.
