GENERAL MAINTENANCE
Dirt, sand and grit are very abrasive and are your timber floor's
worst enemy. Use an anti-static mop regularly. We suggest Nomad type
mats at exterior doors to prevent sand, dust and grit from getting
inside. Slip resistant mats just inside the door are of great
assistance.
Strong light, particularly direct sunlight can cause
your floor coating to change colour rapidly, so move your decorative
rugs occasionally to protect your floor. Tinting of windows will also
protect your floor.
In areas where extremes of temperature, lack of ventilation or
moisture variation are common, cracks may appear in the floor. Air
Conditioners are rarely humidity corrected and in winter, can create
an extremely dry atmosphere, which can cause shrinkage and cracking of
the floor.
Fit protective felt pads to the legs of all chairs and tables, so that
they can be moved easily without the risk of scuffing the floor. If
you have furniture with castors, it is preferable they be barrel type
as ball casters may cause damage.
Dust, sweep, vacuum or mop regularly. Worn vacuum heads scratch your
floor. If you prefer, use a clean warm damp mop with a recommended
cleaner such as ‘Polyclean’ at twenty to one dilution rate.
Manufacturers recommendations must be adhered to at all times
particularly mopping off the cleaner mixture to avoid streaking.
Stiletto heels, especially worn ones, will dent any hard floor
surface, even concrete. Keep doormats clean. Wipe up spills promptly
with a dry cloth or paper towel. For sticky substances moisten the
cloth slightly and dry as you go.
DO NOT USE HARSH HOUSEHOLD DETERGENTS AS THEY MAY CONTAIN
CHEMICALS THAT AFFECT THE COATING MATERIAL USED.
EXTREMELY IMPORTANT
Northern Suburbs Timber Flooring Pty Ltd does not recommend the use of
propriety cleaners and polishes featured in hardware stores and
supermarkets for use on our Polyurethane coated floors. Polyurethane
Gloss is not designed to be polished. If the householder takes care to
regularly keep the floor dust free and clean with a warm damp mop this
should be sufficient to keep a nice sheen for many years. Food and
drink spillages, as with cooking oil splash in kitchens must be
addressed immediately.
POLYURETHANE
Sweep dust and grit with a dry and thoroughly clean electrostatic mop.
Use a warm damp mop after dust removal. Keep both mops clean at all
times.
At the end of it’s service life it will be necessary to sand it down
to the raw timber and refinish.
Silicone sprays cause violent reaction to polyurethane finishes and
their use in these rooms should be avoided at all times.
Coating Manufacturers recommended cleaners must be wiped off with a
damp mop after application. Streaking will occur if this is not done
properly.
TUNG OIL FINISHES
It is essential the floor is kept free of dirt and grit, by sweeping
it thoroughly with an electrostatic sweep mop and then use a clean
warm damp mop. Please keep these mops clean by regular washing. Oil
impregnated sweep mops must not be used as residues may be left and
these could cause slip hazards.
The floor should be damp mopped on a regular basis to remove any dirt
which is not picked up by the sweep mop.
Tung Oil finishes should be buffed and re-coated before they have worn
through to the timber. Excessive wear leads to the necessity to
undertake a total re-sand of the floor. In most cases, regular coating
will eliminate the need for such costly repairs.
Note: Once polishes are used on oil finishes they will require
continual use and maintenance. Ensure you are clear on the maintenance
required for oil finishes prior to final decision. We recommend Toby
Tung Oil Polish for floors coated with Tung Oil.
